Saffron Walden Information

The ancient market town of Saffron Walden can be found some 15 miles (24 km) south of Cambridge with origins going back to pre-Roman times with some evidence of both Bronze and Iron Age tribal settlements in the area. At that time it was probably known as Chipping Walden. With a population of around 15,000 this town supports a twice weekly market, some light industry and a range of cultural and entertainment opportunities. In Medieval times, the town was a prominent centre in the wool trade but by the 16th century a major industry developed around the cultivation of the crocus plant. The flower was considered to be precious, as an extract was used in medicines, perfumes and seemingly even an aphrodisiac. However, the lasting industrial use of the crocus was to extract Saffron which was an expensive yellow dye for the clothing and fabric industries. It was this Saffron gave its name to the town.
